The good news is that rather than dueling, the pair are collaborating on a new collection of AWGE x Amina Muaddi shoes.
Classic is a much overused word, but it's rightfully applied to Salvatore Ferragamo's ladylike Vara shoe, with its buckled bow. Designed in 1978 by Fiamma Ferragamo, daughter of the house founder, it has recently inspired a new, more streamlined shoe no metal hardware or grosgrain ribbon the Viva ballerina. I've modernized the design elements while celebrating the Vara's signature femininity, says creative director Paul Andrew.
She will also be launching the Saysh Collective, a digital subscription 10 a month that offers consumers workout videos, networking opportunities, and more. For me, this brand represents so much more than simply the shoes we wear or compete in, she says.
The collaboration is Muaddi's first for her own brand, Bottega Veneta Heels though she has also designed a range for Rihanna's Fenty collection. For me, it was important that the first collaboration I do is one that is special and close to my heart, she says. I wanted to do it with someone who shares my values and my perspective on creativity and design.
They took it to a place where I could never have seen it, that was just really exciting, Williams says over a Zoom call. The inaugural Serena Williams Design Crew collection takes cues from Williams's life such as her daughter's initials a double meaning with zero meaning love in tennis, West African kente cloth inspired prints with hidden S monograms, and her 23 Grand Slam titles and incorporates them into ready to wear and footwear. I feel like they were able to communicate my aesthetics very well through the silhouettes and patterns that they brought and in the colors as well, Williams says.
